Our Story

The Belleville Area Historical Society traces its roots back to 1979, when a small group of passionate community members formed the Park Restoration Committee. Founded by Judy Warmuth, Kathryn Lamboley, Mary Pauli, Philomene Armstrong, Joyce McKay, Bob Hoffman, and Jerry Remy, the group set out with a simple but ambitious goal: to preserve and celebrate Belleville’s local heritage. Their dedication laid the foundation for what would become a lasting community institution.

 

Over the following decade, from 1979 through 1991, the committee spearheaded major restoration efforts, including remodeling the lower level of the historic Old Library building and adding the gazebo and fountain that remain beloved features today. These accomplishments were made possible through creative fundraising events, such as guided tours of notable local landmarks like Fischer Hall and the Paoli Mill. Equally important was the broad support of the Belleville community, with help from the Senior Citizens, the Belleville Busy Beavers, the Girl Scouts, the Homemakers, the Economisers, the Catholic, Methodist & First UCC Churches, the Friends of the Library and the Women's Softball League—all contributing time, resources, and enthusiasm.

 

On November 13, 1997, the Park Restoration Committee was formally incorporated with the Wisconsin Historical Society and became the Belleville Area Historical Society. Since that time, BAHS has continued its mission through the tireless efforts of local volunteers and the generosity of community patrons. Together, they ensure that Belleville’s stories, documents, and memories are preserved—not just for today, but for generations to come.
